Plantar Muscle Group

The Plantar Muscle Group is made up of many muscles within the plantar surface of each foot and as these muscles contract, they plantar flex the foot and flex ‘scrunch’ the toes. Within this plantar surface of the foot, a painful condition known as plantar fasciitis can develop. It is an inflammation and development of scar tissue within the plantar fascia and can be quite excruciating, depending on the severity. This condition is often caused and exacerbated by poor and ill-fitting footwear, such as the ballet pumps or ‘ugg boots’, that whilst women find them fashionable force the foot into a constant plantar contraction.

Standing, plantar flex one foot by raising the heel off the floor, slightly flex this knee and gently force the toes and ‘ball’ of this foot into the floor. Ito increase the intensity of the stretch, gently ‘squat’ further towards the floor.
